The Big Blue & You 'Ocean Adventure Series" is a fun-filled program that teaches kids 6-13 years old the importance of the ocean and engage them in learning about marine science. During this program, children use art to learn and voice their opinion about ocean animals, environmental issues, sea life, pollution, recycling and many other important environmental subjects. They also participate and enjoy fitness activities, a healthy lunch and snacks. Expert presenters are invited to participate in each program and are encouraged to enhance their presentations with interactive activities for the attendees. These experts bring exciting components such as touch tanks, videos, games, samples, hands-on activities, etc. to educate and inspire the children. Overall, the Ocean Adventure Series program has inspired our participants to become more conscious and they have also become powerful advocates for the environment and the ocean.
In 2009, this program was conducted at the Newport Beachside Hotel in Sunny Isles Beach, FL. Young hotel guests as well as youth from the community joined in the fun one Saturday each month to spend the day with the Big Blue & You crew. South Broward High School students also volunteered their time to mentor and assist with the programming. We are currently continuing the program at Diamond Minds Transformational Leadership Academy in Miami Gardens and plan to provide this unique experience to many more children in South Florida in the near future.
