The Big and You Presents

Art By The Sea 2012

Saturday, March 10, 2012 11 am – 5 pm
Historic Virginia Key Beach Park

ART BY THE SEA is an annual event designed to use various art forms to inspire youth to spread their message about environmental and marine conservation throughout the community. The attendees are able to construct art projects, i.e. posters, sand sculptures, painted surfboards, sand & sea animal art pieces & art “beach cleanup” (creating art out of found objects on the beach). Throughout the day, interactive performances by local artists will entertain the attendees with drumming and dancing. Art activities will include the following: create a graphic collage of sea animals with Benari Kamau, paint ocean murals with Meme Ferre and DeWayne Bowen, design colorful fishes made of recycled plastic bottles with Edwin Villasmil, photograph natural art near the ocean with William Sanchez and be a part of creating a traveling marine debris art installation with Kim Rizio and Amy Kyle Case. Another exciting feature of the event will be a live sea creature Touch Tank brought by Biscayne Nature Center. The F.I.N.Sea Foundation will be hosting a special interactive science booth with hands-on learning activities that the whole family will enjoy. The entire event will be filmed and will include interviews of the participants and footage of all activities to create an episode which will be aired on a BB&Y web show. This event will enhance the artistic talent of participating children/youth and at the same time make them aware of the importance of preserving the ocean and the environment.

Few of us have the privilege to share edifying experiences– such experiences that help us grow as a person and allow us to learn solely by means of human-to-human interaction. While most of these experiences are interpersonal, what I was exposed to in the One Water Workshop was more than surreal. It was a place dedicated to knowledge and the careful interactions between humans and nature, a truly interpersonal experience between nature and me, rather than simply with other students.

There is a space between every epiphany, a space or window of opportunity, in which you can take into effect your realization and work towards a positive goal. My window of opportunity was when I realized that we all have to be stewards of the ocean, but not just the ocean, as everything in nature is related and interconnected in a big broad chain that is greater than ourselves. If forms of mass media can help us share our ideas and thoughts and if more people aimed towards the idea of being stewards of the ocean, then we would be able to make a difference! In the One Water Workshop I learned that if we made the facts known the public will listen, and an educated public will lead to better decisions as a community. Whether its being environmentally aware or just aware of our immediate actions we can all make a difference and teach others about the causes of their actions.

One Water Workshop at the Miami Science Museum

“At the screening for the One Water Workshop, I was absolutely enthralled to have the liberty to show our video to such an ample audience. I personally felt that these PSAs were created from the passion of a youthful community could bring us one step closer to a more cleaner and productive world. Seeing that they made such an impact on all of us, and some of our families at the smaller screenings, I was hyped up to see what they will bring to the newer, populous audience.”

“Having the honour of looking at our hard work on the big screen made me feel like I accomplished something not only for myself, but for our blue planet also. This helped some of us come out that little shell we were in and find ourselves- pasting them into the camera where everyone can see. It helped us realize our full potential and how we can use it to entertain an audience and make them think at the same time.
Being there at the screening made me realize that there are so many people that care about our planet as much as we do- they were not only there to view our PSAs but also there to support us. What I was really planning and hoping on, for the people who walked out of there that eventful afternoon, was for them just to have a sense of urgency and a better understanding on where us as high school kids, stand on the impact of pollution on our planet and we are trying our best to make people become more aware of it.”

World Oceans Day is a global celebration of the ocean held every June 8th

This year, The Museum of Discovery and Science invite you come to join us and celebrate World Oceans Day.

Our events start on Saturday and Sunday, June11-12 from 12p.m. – 4p.m.

Take part in World Oceans Day events and activities for helping our ocean in the future!

World Oceans Day allows us to:

Change perspective – encourage individuals to think about what the ocean means to them and what it has to offer all of us with hopes of conserving it for present and the future generations.

Learn - discover the wealth of diverse and beautiful ocean creatures and habitats, how our daily actions affect them, and how we are all interconnected.

Change our ways – we are all linked to, and through, the ocean! By taking care of your backyard, you are acting as a caretaker of our ocean. Making small modifications to your everyday habits will greatly benefit our blue planet.

Celebrate - whether you live inland or on the coast we are all connected to the ocean; take the time to think about how the ocean affects you, and how you affect the ocean, and then organize or participate in activities that celebrate our world ocean.

We can’t wait to see you at the upcoming World Oceans Day!
